Montepeloso, Nardo Costa Toscana IGT

Nardo is a perfect expression of the Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera vines grown on a strictly limited selection of the oldest terroirs. This uncompromising concentration on the finest grapes of each vintage produces a world-class Italian-Mediterranean wine of stupendous quality. Made in extremely small quantities, no more than 2.000 bottles are produced each year.

The Nardo is distinguished by a whole range of notes that give the wine striking aromatic brightness and perfume. Showing brambleberries, dark plums, dark cherries, fresh mint, tea leaves, mocha, oyster shell and iodine. Incredibly structured and dense yet agile and tangy. The purity of fruit is breathtaking, as are the velvety and encompassing tannins. Long on the umami-laden finish. Even with all of its richness, Nardo remains so precise and finely cut. It is simply stunning.

THE MAKER: Montepeloso

Tucked away in the hills of Suvereto near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast – one of the hottest areas in Tuscany – is the 15-acre Montepeloso estate.
The winemaker, Fabio Chiarelotto, admits about his wines that it's “easy to produce concentrated wines in such a hot climate, but it's much harder to achieve elegance and finesse”. In order to take full advantage of the terroir's potential he overhauled the vineyards in 1997, retraining, pruning, and even regrafting many vines. In the cellar, he does relatively short macerations, employs natural yeasts, and bottles without filtration.
